Instagram Apologizes to Kim Kardashian After Removing Her Appetite Suppressant Post
Instagram has apologized to Kim Kardashian for removing a photo the reality star shared on Tuesday promoting an appetite suppressing lollipop. The social media company restored Kardashian’s original post shortly after apologizing on Wednesday.
“We mistakenly removed content we shouldn’t have and apologized to Kim for the inconvenience caused,” a spokesperson for Instagram told The Mighty. “We worked quickly to rectify the mistake as soon as we were made aware. The post has now been restored.”
Many Instagram and Twitter users voiced issues about the post, stating the photo promoted disordered eating and was especially dangerous to Kardashian’s younger fans, who look up to her.
Instagram originally removed the photo because it said the photo violated its community guidelines, which state posts that promote self-injurious behavior are not allowed. Eating disorders are included in Instagram’s self-injury policy.

Eating disorders affect approximately 30 million people in the U.S. and have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. The National Institute for Mental Health states that eating disorders typically present during teen years and young adulthood and affect women at higher rates than men. According to the Pew Research Center, 71 percent of Americans aged 18 to 24 use Instagram.
