Mischief managed: Colorado-based artist Stefanie Hook went viral after sharing a prototype of her color-changing Marauder’s Map from the popular “Harry Potter” series on TikTok. The mask starts plain black, but when you breath on it, the color changes and the secret map is revealed.

I like to give the average person the ability to own items that are unique, and bring magic into the real world in hopes to further inspire others to create and be creative. — Stefanie Hook

Making magic: Hook shared the secret to her magical masks with Business Insider, and it doesn’t even require a wand. She uses pre-printed Marauder’s Map fabric, which is then treated with a color-changing pigment. Though the process isn’t complicated, she said it can take up to 17 hours just to create one mask.

The Frontlines: Face masks have become critical to slow the spread of COVID-19. While masks such as Hook’s are not medical grade, current CDC guidelines indicate that even cloth masks reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus.

A Mighty Voice: Our community member, Lydia Joy Launderville, explained why face masks are so important during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Putting a mask on while having to be out and about during essential errands, even if you don’t feel unwell, could go a long way toward protecting the health of your community.” You can submit your first person story, too.
