Nurse’s Immense Kindness Gives Terminally Ill Mom the Chance to See Her Daughter Say, ‘I Do’


Sarah West and Ethan Schowalter-Hay didn’t mean to ignore setting a wedding date. West was focused on being at the side of her mother, Sherri, who was battling cancer at Salem Hospital in Salem, Ore. Planning a wedding would take time and attention away from West’s mom, who wouldn’t be well enough to attend an event outside the hospital.

So a nurse named Laura Peterson decided to plan the big day — in the hospital.

“We said you are going to have the wedding of your dreams,” Peterson says in the video below. “All you have to do is show up.”

In just three days, Peterson planned everything — local businesses donated flowers and a wedding dress. Volunteers signed up to handle hair, makeup and music. Family and friends booked their travel plans to get to Salem on time.

And on February 1, Mom was in attendance to watch her daughter say, “I do.”

“It was just beautiful,” Sherri West says in the clip below, after the ceremony. “I can die happy.”

West passed away two weeks later, according to KPTV. To honor her life, the hospital recently released the video of her final wish being fulfilled.
