Archie Comics Introduces Its First Character With a Disability

Meet Harper, Archie Comics‘ first character with a disability. She uses a wheelchair and crutches, but that’s only one part of her story.

“With Harper, we acknowledged her disability, but we also acknowledged how it doesn’t define her, and it’s not all she’s about,” Archie writer and artist Dan Parent told “And she uses her disability to empower other people. So we address it, but we don’t make the entire story about it.”

Harper’s character, whose disability is a result of a car accident, is based on children’s author Jewel Kats, who lives with chronic pain, arthritis and low bone density in her right leg, according to Polymic. Kats has written ten books, seven of which are about disability. She met Parent at a 2013 Fan Expo in Toronto, CBR News reported.

“I wheeled right up to him and I looked at him square in the eye, and I said to him, ‘Why isn’t there a character with a disability in Riverdale? How is that possible?'” Kats told the news outlet. The pair exchanged contact info, and Parent began brainstorming Harper’s character.

“Jewel read the story over and consulted on it, from her firsthand experience, she was able to make sure we were doing it properly,” Parent told Think Progress.

We can’t wait to read.
