Why I Make Short Nature Vlogs for People Who Dissociate

Distraction can sometimes be a healthy outlet for an individual. When life can become too overwhelming, coming back to yourself can be one way to regain your sense of self/purpose.

We become distracted through various means. Different forms of social media, work, family, television, YouTube, internet and about anything else you can think of. Don’t worry. It happens to me too, and I am a licensed professional counselor. However, this can lead from healthy distraction into dissociation.

Dissociation can be placed on a continuum, allowing you to separate from reality (thoughts, perceptions, actions and identity.) This can range from mild to extreme. A defense mechanism of sorts, especially for survivors of trauma. When dissociation goes into the more extreme forms, it can lead to a person going into “shutdown mode.”

  • Being disengaged with life and the lives of others
  • The feeling of being detached
  • The misinterpretation of your life and the lives of others
  • The sense of identity being unclear
  • Stresses (physically, emotionally, and mentally) that show up in your life (home, work and elsewhere)

Awareness is one way to get back in touch with ourselves. To check-in as to what is going on with us. Yes, this does require some effort on our part. However, this is something we can work with gradually. Not like how our culture tells us to do things: Jump in full throttle. Pedal to the metal, and potentially burn out in the process. Because it has to be done fast, dirty and in a hurry.

This is the intention behind why I decided to create short vlogging videos when I am out and about on hikes/walks. I created videos about movement-based awareness in the past on yoga, tai chi and qigong. Yet, I felt a change was needed.

The shift happened with the intention: For the viewer to be able to tap into her or his own awareness, rather than me trying to make any imposition as to what it should be. Even though this was never stated directly, it still could have been interpreted as such (on any given day, at any given time).

By allowing the viewer the space to take a few, short moments to view the videos, she or he has the opportunity to:

  • Be present/aware
  • Pause and breathe
  • Decompress
  • Help create a more parasympathetic nervous system response
  • Feel comforted in a safe space
  • Notice, through the use of their senses, what comes up for him or her
  • Come up with similar instances of times/situations that may have been comforting to him or her
  • Creating her or his own meaning-making to life itself
  • Realize we are not stagnant beings and that instead, we are like the nature we see, always changing every day
