When Change Is Hard for Me With My Autism

Growing up, change was extremely hard for me. I would freak out at the slightest change in my daily routine and life. For example, if I usually had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch and one day I had to have another type of sandwich instead, I would go the entire day being upset and angry about it. Being an extremely anxious person didn’t help this either.

It wasn’t until I got a bit older that I finally realized why this was — and it was an easy answer all along. It was because of my autism.

I have noticed a lot of people with autism struggle with this exact same issue, and together we have bonded over it. It’s taken time, but I have finally found peace with it and accepted it a bit more. While I still struggle with it at times, just having close friends and family who understand has helped me overcome it quite a bit.

To help, I will always remind myself that change can be a good thing sometimes and that life would be dull without it. Plus I remind myself that my friends and family are here to guide me through it.

If you struggle with this issue too, remember you are not alone.
