ABC Renews 'The Good Doctor' for a Third Season

On Tuesday, ABC announced “The Good Doctor,” a show that follows the life of a doctor on the autism spectrum, will be renewed for a third season.

The show has seen great success. According to Deadline Hollywood, the show is ABC’s most-watched series, averaging 11.2 million viewers.

The show follows Dr. Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore), a young surgeon with autism who is recruited to work at the prestigious San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. While Shaun struggles to connect with people, he finds his niche at the hospital and challenges his colleagues’ perceptions. Freddie Highmore was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role on the show. The actor is not on the autism spectrum.

Speaking on a panel before the first season premiered, the show’s executive producer, David Shore explained the steps the show took to portray autism. “We saw a lot of doctors, we consulted with people, we’ve got people on the spectrum who we’re working with,” Shore said, according to Deadline. “But he is a specific character, he’s not there to represent autism, he’s there to represent Dr. Shaun Murphy.”

“The Good Doctor” airs Monday nights at 10:00 p.m. EST.
