The Pop Song I Wrote About Anxiety and Depression

Hi, my name is Olivia. I am a pop soul artist with a catalogue of music that ranges from empowering anthems to “you wronged me, now hear me roar” bangers. There have only been a few times in my career where I’ve shown pieces of a more vulnerable and less confident side of myself. But in the spirit of looking inwards and learning more about myself and what truly makes me feel alive, I’ve started digging a little deeper. The deeper I go, the more I find myself writing about anxiety, depression and self-love, or lack there of.

My newly released and most vulnerable project ever, “Fixed,” all started with an extremely emotional 45 minute phone call. Normally, I don’t talk to anyone about this kind of thing, but that day was different. I couldn’t mask my feelings any longer. I came off of airplane mode and spoke about the internal waves of sadness, fatigue, anxiety and nervousness that overwhelmed me. You’ve never known me to be anything but happy so this came as a major shock. Just before the call ended, you bluntly uttered, “We need to get you fixed.”

That call inspired me to get more raw and real in my songwriting, in an effort to understand and process my own emotions. I started with the song “Fixed,” which encompasses every feeling and thought I’ve wanted to shed light on but never felt comfortable to talk about. It’s heavy content matter and the lyrics can be difficult to listen to, especially if you’ve only known me as this happy human. Though it can be hard to talk about, I think it’s really important to. Which is why I’m opening the discussion in my own life starting with this song. I don’t want to hide it anymore and I don’t want other to feel like they have to either. With all the amazing resources available today, there’s never been a better time to talk about mental health. So, I want to open the conversation even more the best way I know how — through music.

Please check out my new music video “Fixed” and let’s make a conscious effort to keep talking about our mental health!
