I’m currently writing this article from an airplane. It feels quite surreal given it’s the first time I’ve flown in a long, long time. I was fortunate to get vaccinated this month and finally have the opportunity to travel with my family. So here I am, on a plane in the middle of the sky, writing my twelfth remote jobs article for The Mighty.

It’s been just over one year since I began writing these articles. Looking back, so much has happened in this past year yet at the same time, it’s as though nothing has changed at all. When I submitted my very first article, I wasn’t wearing a mask. Nobody was. The symbolic piece of that is that I was finally feeling free, nine months after getting my PICC line removed.

Then came the mask, the isolation, the fear, the loss of freedom. All of these are things I’ve dealt with — survived. But this time it felt different. I had lived, survived and thrived with a chronic condition for years. Why was I so terrified?

One piece of me that never went away during my battle with chronic Lyme was my desire to be with my friends and loved ones. While I know this is not the case for many people living with long-term illness, I hated being alone. Being around my loved ones energized me, motivated me, pushed me to heal.

The past year has been incredibly isolating. So today I am celebrating the fact that I am safely traveling with my fully vaccinated family. While my mask is still on, my heart is wide open.

If you are new to these monthly articles, my name is Hannah Olson and I’m the founder of Chronically Capable, a digital talent marketplace and community that connects chronically ill and disabled jobseekers to inclusive employers. We have always believed in the importance of creating space for the chronically ill and disabled to work and excel at their jobs without feeling like they have to sacrifice their health. Now, we’re working on getting employers across the globe to join us in actively supporting our community!

If you want to keep up with our work and our job opportunities, be sure to sign up for our newsletter or check out our Instagram to stay updated! On that note, I’d love to share seven remote work opportunities available this April.
