May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and if you’re like me, this past year has taken a toll on your mental health. If you’re feeling this way, please know that you are not alone.

Even before COVID-19, the prevalence of mental illness was increasing. According to Mental Health America, “in 2017-2018, 19% of adults experienced a mental illness, an increase of 1.5 million people over last year’s dataset.” This means that one in five adults in the U.S. will experience mental illness each year. Yet, not enough people will seek help.

The devastation of the pandemic has had a marked effect on people’s mental health, including my own. I have said this before, but I am by no means a healthcare professional. I will, however, share my experience openly and honestly so that nobody has to feel like they are in this fight alone.

As someone running a business, I am fortunate to not have lost my job during the pandemic. During past economic downturns, it has been found that job loss is associated with increased anxiety, depression, distress and low self-esteem. Losing a job is painful at any point in time, but when you add in a global pandemic, the pressure can feel unsurmountable.

I am here to tell you that as someone on the other side (working to bring employment opportunities to disadvantaged communities), employers are recognizing the impact the pandemic has had on their employees’ mental and physical health. They aren’t just recognizing it, though: they are acting on it. We have seen a huge increase of employers looking to hire chronically ill and disabled job seekers. We have also seen employers investing large sums of money into education and resources to support the health and well-being of their employees.

While this has been a devastating year for so many people, I have a newfound hope that this year has shaped the future of work for the better. We have seen not only the benefits of remote work, but also how easy it is to make accommodations. I am confident that we are at a tipping point in our work culture and that most workplaces will not go back to the dusty, outdated ideas and practices that they held prior to the pandemic.

If you are new to these monthly articles, my name is Hannah Olson and I’m the founder of Chronically Capable, a digital talent marketplace and community that connects chronically ill and disabled jobseekers to inclusive employers. We have always believed in the importance of creating space for the chronically ill and disabled to work and excel at their jobs without feeling like they have to sacrifice their health. Now, we’re working on getting employers across the globe to join us in actively supporting our community!

1. Quartet Health

Speaking about mental health, there’s no better employer to start off with than Quartet Health. Quartet is a platform that makes it easier for people to get the best mental health care for them. As an inclusive employer on Chronically Capable, I can say first-hand that Quartet is a company that truly values the health and well-being of their employees and strives to be inclusive every single day. Because Quartet is shaping the future of mental health care, they make sure that their employees are taken care of as well. They offer 100% health and dental coverage, mental health benefits, unlimited vacation time, paid sick days and more. Most importantly, they are remote and work-from-home friendly!

Completely remote-first, always. My favorite kind of company. Facet Wealth is a financial management company that has been working remotely long before the pandemic. As an inclusive employer on Chronically Capable, they pride themselves on supporting their employees and are actively seeking out candidates just like you! If you’re someone struggling with mental health, you can join Facet Wealth’s employee resource group. Based in Austin, TX with the option for employees to work remote, Keet Health has a deep respect for chronically ill and disabled folks like you and me. 4. Outshine Labels

Disabled peeps — look no further! Outshine Labels is an online marketplace for disability advocates that helps families earn extra money for their families. This company is working above and beyond to amplify the voices of the disability community. While they are currently only hiring for a part-time position, I wanted to be sure to include this opportunity as the company is beyond inclusive! Experience with Shopify and Adobe Illustrator is not required, but is a plus. The team will provide instructions and teach you anything you might need. Weekly hours are flexible and can be agreed upon during the interview process.

5. Aila Health

This month is full of opportunities in the healthcare space and I’m loving it! Next up is Aila Health, an early stage precision health startup seeking to fundamentally change the way autoimmune diseases are diagnosed and managed. Patients (like me!) use their app to consolidate all of their health information in one place, track their symptoms, identify their unique triggers and connect with a community of other chronic illness warriors. If you’re looking to transition back into the workplace, this may be a great fit for you as the position will start at ~20 hours a week with the potential to convert into a full-time role.

6. Karat

For those of you with engineering backgrounds, you’ve likely completed a technical interview. These can be incredibly daunting and scary. I know this because a friend of mine recently went through this experience and absolutely despised it. Karat is disrupting technical interviews with a belief that every technical interview should be predictive, fair and highly enjoyable for candidates. Based in Seattle, the company allows employees to work from wherever they are happiest. Benefits include competitive salaries, 100% healthcare coverage, paid parental leave, flexible vacation and more.

7. Foundation

I came across Foundation and was blown away with their careers page. It was one of the most comprehensive and inclusive careers pages I’ve ever seen. Spread across the globe, employees at Foundation can work wherever they please. The company itself is tackling B2B content marketing, something I personally am always struggling with. While I don’t see anything about salary and benefits, be sure to inquire when you apply and let the hiring manager know how you heard about the company!
