My name is Kristie Combs and I was diagnosed with Erythromelagia (EM) in February 2016. EM is a rare disorder that causes burning pain, warmth, and redness in the extremities; this usually occurs in the feet and hands (NORD, 2017). I have been able to manage a lot of my pain with medication and social support. It has held me back from many things, but I continue to push on everyday. I am a social worker, and I am currently pursuing my Doctor of Social Work at the University of Southern California. My focus is developing programs to help eradicate social isolation among adults with rare disease, disabilities, and chronic pain.
