Russell studies psychology. His passion for mental health and fighting the stigma arose from his own past struggles with severe social anxiety and suicidal ideation as well as the history of alcoholism/addiction in his family, all issues that he firmly believes could have been abated if mental illness was more openly discussed and not stigmatized. In addition to working with Active Minds, Russell has been active in UMaine’s LGBTQ community, and he is a huge nerd for educational trainings, workshops and presentations of all kinds. In the future, he hopes to pursue a Master’s degree in social work and work in some sort of educational role and/or with adolescents.
