Dermatomyositis is an uncommon type of inflammatory myopathy characterized by muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash, which often includes a distinctive reddish-purple rash on the upper eyelid or across the cheeks, the bridge of the nose, and on the forehead and scalp. It may cause difficulty in performing certain activities, such as raising the arms, climbing stairs and some may develop difficulties in speech and swallowing. Dermatomyositis affects more females than males and there is no cure, but periods of remission may occur.
