Dysautonomia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of medical conditions that are characterized by dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS controls the unconscious, automatic functions of the body such as blood pressure, heart rate, digestion, kidney function, and temperature control. Individuals with dysautonomia have issues regulating the bodily functions controlled by the ANS, which can result in fainting or lightheadedness, unstable blood pressure, malnutrition and abnormal heart rates, among other symptoms.
