Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a rare genetic condition that predisposes an individual to colon and/or rectal cancer at a young age. It is characterized by hundreds to thousands of precancerous colorectal polyps that are certain to develop into cancer if left untreated. Screenings, including colonoscopies and sigmoidoscopies, and potentially surgery to remove the entire colon are among the medical recommendations.
