Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare condition in which the immune system damages the nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and possible paralysis last usually last for a few weeks. While most fully recover, some individuals have long-term nerve damage and, in rare cases, have died due to difficulty breathing. There are many causes of GBS, but a bacterial infection (Campylobacter jejuni) is the most common cause.
