Hirschsprung’s disease is a birth defect that is a result when there are nerve cells missing at the end of an infant’s colon. It is present at birth and causes blockages in the bowel, and the infant is unable to have a bowel movement in the days following birth. Surgery to bypass and/or remove the dysfunctional part of the colon is necessary to treat Hirschsprung’s disease.
