Hypotonia, a term meaning decreased muscle tone, can be a condition on its own (benign congenital hypotonia or a subsequent symptom of another condition such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. Benign congenital hypotonia is commonly detected during infancy, and the infant exhibits a floppy quality when held. Other symptoms include delayed fine and gross motor development such as trouble holding his or her head up or sitting up.
