Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, or HIE, is a brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation (asphyxia) before, during or after birth, or during childhood. HIE can cause impairments including epilepsy, developmental and/or neurodevelopmental delay, and motor and/or cognitive impairment. There are many causes of HIE, such as placental insufficiency or abruption, umbilical knots, cord compression, extremely low maternal blood pressure.
