Leukemia is a cancer of the blood-forming tissues, including bone marrow and the lymphatic system, that causes the abnormal production of malfunctioning white blood cells. There are many types of leukemia that are categorized by the speed of disease development (acute or chronic) and by the type of affected blood cell (lymphocytes or myelocytes).  Symptoms include pain in the bones or joints, swollen lymph nodes, fever, fatigue, bleeding or bruising easily, frequent infections, weight loss and loss of appetite.
