Leukodystrophy is an umbrella term for a group of rare disorders that affect cells in the brain and central nervous system (CNS). The disorder disrupts the growth and/or maintenance of the the myelin sheath, which is the material that surrounds and protects nerve cells, and slows down or blocks the brain’s signals to the rest of the body. This leads to progressive problems with movement, speech, vision, hearing and mental and physical development. Most leukodystrophies are genetic and appear during infancy or childhood.
