Liver cancer occurs when normal cells in the liver develop into malignant or cancerous cells that abnormal in appearance and behavior. The cancerous cells can become destructive to normal tissues, and can spread within the liver or to other organs, which disrupts proper function. Most cases of liver cancer are linked to chronic liver disease and cirrhosis caused by alcohol use/abuse, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
