Menkes disease is a genetic disorder of copper metabolism that is categorized by seizures, intellectual disability, failure to thrive, stunted growth, unstable body temperature, unusual facial features, and unusual hair color and texture. It is caused by the cell’s failure to transport copper, which is essential for the function and structure of various enzymes that control the development of the brain, bones, liver, arteries and hair. It is detectable before birth and infants are often born prematurely.
