Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) is a term used to describe a rare connective tissue disorder that cannot be specifically diagnosed. Individuals with MCTD experience symptoms of an overlapping group of disorders, including polymyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and scleroderma. MCTD affects the cardiac, arthritic, pulmonary systems and the skin, and other symptoms include kidney disease, muscle weakness, and esophageal problems. The cause of MCTD is unknown and treatment often includes medication.
