A mood disorder is a term used to broadly describe a type of mental illness that affects the mood, such as types of depression or bipolar disorders. The most common types of mood disorders include major depressive disorder, dysthymia, cyclothymic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder and bipolar disorder, and mood changes related to medical illness. Treatment for mood disorders varies by type, but commonly includes therapy and/or medication.
