Motor Neuron Diseases

Community, Stories & Info

Motor neuron diseases (MNDs) are a group of rare neurological disorders that progressively damage parts of the nervous system. As the disease progresses, individuals lose control of voluntary muscle activity such as walking, speaking, breathing and swallowing. MNDs are classified based on whether they are inherited or not, and if the degeneration affects the upper or lower motor neurons, or both. Examples of MNDs includes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), primary lateral sclerosis, progressive muscular atrophy and progressive bulbar palsy.
