Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder that affects the central nervous system. Symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, disturbed nocturnal sleep, loss of muscle tone, distorted perceptions and inability to move or talk (sleep paralysis). Individuals with narcolepsy often have trouble staying awake for long periods of time, which can greatly affect their daily lives.  There is no cure but treatment options include medications and behavioral modification therapies.
