Reactive Attachment Disorder

Community, Stories & Info

Reactive attachment disorder (RAD) is a disorder in which an infant or young child does not establish healthy attachments to parents or caregivers. It is usually caused by extreme neglect and lack of emotional warmth and includes two types: inhibited and disinhibited. Individuals with inhibited RAD are usually detached, resistant to comforting, excessively unemotional and withdrawn or avoidant, and those with disinhibited RAD are indiscriminately sociable or inappropriately selective in the choice of attachment figures. Treatment include psychological therapy, parent/caregiver education and establishing a stable environment or positive interactions.
