Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome

Community, Stories & Info

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS), also known as complex regional pain syndrome, is a rare condition characterized by severe, chronic pain. It is a disorder of the sympathetic nervous system and it is thought that RSDS is caused by abnormal, excessive responses of the sympathetic nervous system. Symptoms include a burning pain, swelling and tenderness in one or both arms and/or legs, and fingers, palms or shoulders. Although there is currently no standard treatment for RSDS, early treatments, including physical therapy, medications and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS), are available and recommended.
