Short Bowel Syndrome

Community, Stories & Info

Short bowel syndrome is a condition in which the body is unable to absorb the necessary amount of nutrients due to the loss or loss of function of the small intestine. The cause of short bowel syndrome is either the absence or damage of the small intestine at birth, or surgical removal due to intestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease. The reduced amount of nutrients including fats, sugars, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and fluids can lead to a variety of symptoms including malnutrition, diarrhea, dehydration and unintended weight loss. Treatment involves nutritional supplements, specialized diets and/or parenteral nutrition.
