Talking About Schizophrenia With The Mighty's Mental Health Community

Schizophrenia can interrupt every aspect of an adult’s life, but it doesn’t have to. Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and The Mighty partnered together to ask adults living with schizophrenia how the right schizophrenia treatment plans helped make the difference for them. Together, let’s change schizophrenia expectations.

Schizophrenia can interrupt every aspect of an adult’s life, but it doesn’t have to.

“To people who are having challenges with the treatment process of schizophrenia, I would recommend to try to seek out other people that have had the same challenges with the disorder. They can definitely offer a lot of support as you navigate through this journey.”

For adults living with schizophrenia, recovery is an ongoing process. Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., partnered with The Mighty to ask adults living with schizophrenia how the right treatment plans helped make the difference for them.

This is what volunteers from The Mighty community had to say.

What would you say to an adult having a hard time following their schizophrenia treatment plan?

“Find somebody to help you stay accountable, to help you stay on track of things, to stay on top of things.”

“For someone having a hard time following a treatment plan, I would share my story, what helped me and recommend a support group. This can be a manageable illness but you have to take steps to help yourself.”

What advice would you give an adult who is newly diagnosed with schizophrenia?

“When I was first diagnosed, I wish someone had told me the joy would far outweigh the sorrow.”

“I wish I knew when I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia to be patient – be patient with the medication and the therapy. It’s definitely worth it.”

“You got to accept it, you got to accept that you have schizophrenia, you have a mental illness. Be patient with medication.”

– Jason, a volunteer with the SHARE Network, a Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., program.

– Talk to your doctor about finding a treatment that might work for you.

“I just celebrated 20 years of marriage because I followed my treatment plan.”

“I’ve gotten off of treatment plans before because I didn’t think they were working and I got upset. I didn’t always understand that there is more than one medication out there that can help or more than one type of therapy that can help.”

For adults living with schizophrenia, finding a treatment plan that works for you may help make the difference. This plan may include supportive therapy and medication, such as daily oral medications and once-monthly injections.

If you are an adult living with schizophrenia, talk to your doctor about a treatment plan that may be right for you.
