Intern positions:

Community Partnerships Intern  Los Angeles, California or remote

We are now taking applications for an internship starting in February 2017.

The Mighty is building a robust Partner Program to give our readers easy access to the world’s best health nonprofit resources. Over 150 partners have already joined, like American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, To Write Love On Her Arms and the National Autism Association, and the number grows every week!

As Community Partnerships Intern, you’ll work directly with our Director of Community Partnerships to run, grow, and improve the Partner Program. You’ll interact directly with nonprofit leaders and boost both your communications and organization skills. It’s a great opportunity to gain both nonprofit and business experience while building something that has a real impact in people’s lives.

This position is paid.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in the field of health
  • Advanced organizational skills
  • Comfort handling email communications with partners
  • Experience and comfort developing and working with Excel spreadsheets
  • Creative thinking about building a powerful program for nonprofit partners
  • Understanding of social media beyond the basics of Facebook and Twitter
  • Experience working with nonprofits and/or within the medical community a plus

Editorial Intern

We’re looking for a talented intern to join our editorial team.

In this role, you’ll work with our group of experienced editors from The New York Times, The Huffington Post and other top publishers. Your main responsibility will be to edit and publish 8-10 personal stories per day from our lovely contributor community (4,500 contributors and counting). You’ll also work with our editors to complete special projects as they come up.

This is an opportunity to get real editorial experience and create stories that help people in a meaningful way.

To excel in this role, you’ll need:

  • A collaborative mindset
  • Interest in digital media and publishing
  • Strong copy editing skills (speed is important)
  • Experience working with WordPress or similar platforms
  • Genuine interest in the topics we cover (primarily health-related)
  • Willingness to learn about a variety of disabilities and diseases
  • The ability to community and collaborate with contributors in a professional way

You must be available for at least 3-5 full days per week. We have a preference for interns that can work from our office in Burbank (near LA), but we will also consider exceptional remote applicants.

Full-time positions:

Contributor Editor

(Note: We are also willing to consider part-time candidates for this position. At least 20 hours per week would be required.)

The Mighty has a network of over 4,500 contributors that write about their experiences living with health challenges. We’re looking for someone who can join our editorial team to help edit and publish our contributors’ stories.

To excel at this position, you will need:

  • A sharp eye for editing (we’ll give you a test)
  • The ability to work quickly (many stories per day)
  • Experience using WordPress or similar digital publishing platforms
  • Genuine interest and familiarity with the topics on The Mighty
  • The ability to communicate and collaborate with contributors in a professional, constructive way
  • Expertise in formulating effective SEO headlines a big plus

Lead Full-Stack Developer

We’re looking for Lead full-stack engineer that has both LAMP and MEAN experience.

Please note:

  • You will help build a development team for fast growing startup.
  • You will be responsible for coding and management of other team members.
  • You will own the technology decision making process working closely with CEO and VP Product to provide company with foundation built to scale with roadmap and monetization plans.
  • Full-time, in-house only.
  • Must be comfortable running the entire tech stack, server-side to front-end.

Detailed Responsibilities:

  • Own all software development. Current stack is WordPress but need to build outside of WordPress in the near future.
  • Identify best of class technological solutions to develop and support social-media, community and communication applications.
  • Help build and lead development team. Including overseeing hiring, managing out-sourced developers, and all The Mighty technology (platforms, IT, security).

Job Skills Required:

  • Expert in WordPress development. LAMP and MEAN stack experience
  • Responsive/Adaptive Web Design. CSS Pre-processors (LESS, SCSS, SASS, Compass, Stylus)
  • Build/Dev Tools (Grunt, Gulp, Bower, Yeoman, Modernizer)
  • Client Side Routing (Hash & HTML5)
  • Familiarity with AWS beyond EC2 and S3 (e.g., Lambda, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, SNS, SQS, Redshift)
  • Production deployment experience
  • Experience consuming services exposed via RESTful APIs
  • Experience with A/B testing, test automation, and other engineering best practices
  • Testing automation (Selenium, etc)
  • Familiarity with database architecture, warehousing and complex query building
  • Proven ability to work independently, lead a software project, and mentor junior software engineers
  • Be a great communicator, embrace a collaborative work-style, possess strong leadership skills, and have an ability to write technical documentation
  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or similar

Beat Editor

We’re looking for editors to oversee specific topic areas (e.g. Autism, Down Syndrome, or Cancer — but we are open to others too).

In this role, you’ll split your time between three major responsibilities – writing/editing news and feature stories, recruiting contributors to write about their personal experiences, and building partnerships with non-profits and other organizations that work in the space.

This is an opportunity to become a true authority in the space and build a real community around a disability, disease or illness.

To excel in this role, you’ll need:

  • Genuine interest and familiarity with the topic (you should already be part of the community and explain why you want to cover the category)
  • A strong sense of the issues that people facing these conditions care deeply about and identify with
  • A sharp eye for editing (we’ll give you a test)
  • Deep understanding of how to frame a story to attract a large audience — writing compelling headlines is crucial
  • Experience using WordPress or similar digital publishing platforms
  • Experience posting stories across social media channels like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics or other tools to measure performance
  • The ability to communicate and collaborate with contributors in a professional, constructive way
  • The ability to build meaningful relationships with non-profits and other organizations that share our stories through social media
  • The ability to work quickly and to help out other coworkers as needed (we’re big on teamwork)
