As a person struggling with depression, something that gives me hope is seeing my favorite celebrities speak out on their own mental health issues. Selena Gomez has recently given several interviews on how she’s tackling her mental health and what recovery looks like for her. She speaks of the wonders of talk therapy and even equine therapy.

As a woman of color battling mental health issues, it hits home when these stories are made public, especially by celebrities of color. I feel identified and know I’m not alone struggling in this world.

Selena Gomez had to cancel her tour and take time for herself. She went away on a 90 day treatment retreat and now receives therapy often. She returned to the spotlight at the American Music Awards and spoke on her leave of absence. Her speech made me feel heard. If Selena Gomez can come out of her mental health closet, so can I.

My path to recovery is thorny. I have good and bad days. I’m still testing out what works and what doesn’t. Depression is the little voice in my head telling me I can’t go on or I must quit my job because I’m not good at it. Depression is feeling insecure even when I’m feeling confident. Its societal, circumstantial and biological. Sometimes there’s no reason at all for it. I’m happy, have a stable job and life and a great support system — but alas it is still there.

Every day I’m coping and developing resilience. I’m getting there slowly but surely. It’s a long journey but I’m so proud to have role models like Selena.
