Kristen Bell Sings a Love Ballad to Her Therapist – and It's Hilariously Relatable
No, you’re not the only one wants to ask your therapist questions about his or her personal life, or who’s tempted to look them up on social media.
In a video put out by “Funny or Die,” Kristen Bell sings a song full of confessions about her relationship with her therapist, and it’s hilariously relatable. The song starts after her therapist, played by Yvette Nicole Brown, tells Bell she’s going on vacation. While Bell pretends she’s fine, the video cuts to her playing piano — where she expresses how she really feels. She sings:
You know me better than I know myself, every time we talk my tears swell. I told you all about her weird sex dreams, my sweet therapist Jan Gray PhD. I know I pay you to talk to me, but sometimes I pretend it’s free. Now you’re on vacation, don’t know what to do. Jan Gray PhD, I want to self-care with you.
In a 2016 interview on “Off Camera,” Bell opened up about what it’s like being a “bubbly” person living with anxiety and depression. She told photographer and director Sam Jones she takes medication to manage her anxiety and depression, and challenged the notion that mental health is something we shouldn’t be able to talk about.
“In the medical community, you would never deny a diabetic his insulin. Ever. But for some reason when someone needs a serotonin inhibitor, they’re immediately crazy,” she said. “It’s a very interesting double standard that I don’t often have the ability to talk about, but I certainly feel no shame about.”
You don’t have to have a mental illness diagnosis to go to therapy — allowing yourself to be vulnerable in a safe space and having someone to talk to can be an important tool for everyone. We’re happy videos like this can make us laugh, while also normalizing therapy.
