On Tuesday, Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams posted on social media that she had been seeking mental health treatment. She said she was doing so “proudly and happily,” and that this was her way of leading by example.

She wrote:

For years I have dedicated myself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to recognize when it’s when it’s time to seek help, support and guidance from those that love and care for your wellbeing.

I recently listened to the same advice I have given to thousands around the world and sought help from a great team of professionals.

Today I proudly, happily and healthily stand here as someone who will continue to always lead by example as I tirelessly advocate for the betterment of those in need.

If you change your mind, you can change your life.

Williams has been open about her struggle with depression in the past. On The Talk, she said she didn’t have a name for what she was going through until her 30s. “So many people are talking around asking like they’ve got it all together, and they’re suffering,” she said.

Since posting about her recent decision to seek help, stars like Missy Elliot have shared their support. One fan even said that Williams’ message encouraged them to seek the help they needed.

Making the decision to seek mental health treatment is not an easy one — especially if you’re not surrounded by support. We’re so proud of Williams for taking care of herself, and we hope that in the future, everyone is able to seek mental health treatment with the kind of support she is receiving. Asking for help is never giving up — it’s brave, and we all deserve to feel brave when we take that step.
