Amy Schumer Says She Fell in Love With Her Husband Because of His Autistic Traits
In Amy Schumer’s latest Netflix special “Growing,” she talks about pregnancy, her experiences as a woman and marriage. In the special, which was released on Monday, Schumer says it was her husband’s autistic traits that made her “fall madly in love with him.”
Schumer met her husband Chris Fisher when she hired him to cook for her family during a trip to Martha’s Vineyard. Fischer is a renowned chef. His cookbook, “The Beetlebung Farm Cookbook,” won the 2016 James Beard Award.
Schumer and Fischer got married on Feb. 13, 2018, and are currently expecting their first child.
During her act, she says she knew from the beginning her husband’s brain was different from hers. “My husband was diagnosed with what used to be called Asperger’s. He has autism spectrum disorder. He’s on the spectrum, and there were some signs early on.”
She went on to describe a time where she went on a walk with him and fell. His response was not what she believed most people would do, which would be to ask if she was OK. Instead, she says, “He froze and became a lighthouse, opening and closing his mouth.” She looked up at him and thought, “Huh.” She had many “huh” moments throughout their relationship, adding:
And once he was diagnosed, it dawned on me how funny it was because all of the characteristics that make it clear that he is on the spectrum are all of the reasons why I fell madly in love with him. That’s the truth.
Schumer says her husband says whatever is on his mind, “He keeps it so real.” She goes on to joke about how she gets nothing but honesty from him if she asks how she looks in a certain outfit, “He doesn’t care about social norms or what you expect him to say or do.”
Yet she continues to say he makes her feel more beautiful than anyone else has in her life adding sweetly, “Yes, it’s true.”
Another trait of her husband she appreciates is his inability to lie. She says that is the dream, to have a man who won’t lie to you. The only problem with that? He cannot lie for her either.
Schumer recounts a party where she was talking to a friend and pretended she did not know her friend’s ex-boyfriend was dating someone else. According to Schumer, Fischer pointed out that she did know and had even made a comment about it to him.
“Growing” is available now on Netflix.
