Actress Selma Blair Announces Her Multiple Sclerosis Is in Remission

“Legally Blonde,” “Cruel Intentions” and “Hellboy” star Selma Blair announced today that her multiple sclerosis is now in remission.

Blair announced in August of 2018 that she had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease which impacted her life and career significantly over the past few years.

The forty-nine year old said that as part of the disease, intense physical pain was part of her every day life, causing her to eventually lose the ability to use her left leg and begin having difficulty communicating. She also underwent a variety of treatments, including chemotherapy.

Her upcoming documentary soon to be released in October on Discovery Plus called “Introducing, Selma Blair” will highlight her diagnosis and prognosis journey of trying to navigate her life with M.S.

Blair said in a recent panel interview with the Television Critics Association that as of now, her M.S. is in remission.

“My prognosis is great. I’m in remission. Stem cell put me in remission. It took about a year after stem cell for the inflammation and lesions to really go down,” Blair said.

She also told the panel that she has been somewhat unwilling to open up about her experiences since she was putting weight on herself to “be more healed and more fixed.”

Blair said that she hopes her telling her M.S. story will allow others with the disease some representation on screen.

“I’m thrilled that I have some platform. In no means am I saying that I’m speaking for all people in this condition or any condition of chronic illness, I’m speaking my story and I hope that helps normalize one thing to open the door for other people to be comfortable in telling their stories. I’m thrilled to have this here,” Blair said.
