Staying Strong on Hard Days as the Parent of a Child With Down Syndrome
Do you struggle some days?
It was another one of those days today for me.
One of those days where you struggle so hard to stand strong in knowing how amazing your child is.
Days where doubts creep in.
Days where your heart just aches that others don’t see the value in your child.
Days where others refuse to see the gifts and talents your child has.
But, I will stand strong.
I will hold close in my heart the knowledge that my child is super smart, in his own way.
I will draw strength from our long-term vision that my child belongs in his school and community.
I will remind myself to keep focusing on my child having a voice, being independent and developing job/life skills.
I will remember that my child is a valued member of our community, and they need to treat him with respect and kindness.
I will use my voice to get the resources, services and tools my child needs.
I will show others that my child can — have confidence in him and let him try!
Parents, please stay strong in your beliefs in your child.
It is so hard to stand up to a person or teacher who doesn’t see the value in your child.
It is so hard to be the voice for your child.
It is so hard to be the CEO of your child’s future.
But you can do it!
You are strong enough!
Even on days like today, I commit to standing strong, standing proud and being committed to my vision of belonging and acceptance for my child.
Join me in promoting belonging and acceptance for our children!
