How Creating Art Helps Me Cope With Anxiety and Depression

My name is Rivka Korf and I am a female artist living in Miami with a husband and 2-year-old daughter.

I have struggled with anxiety and depression for as long as I can remember. I paint when I am anxious and it’s really therapeutic for me and a release for my emotions. My paintings are surrealistic and expressionistic by genre, but really all just ways of expressing some of the feelings and what’s going through my head.

Although I do graphic design and illustration for work, my paintings and drawings were always private and personal. My husband encouraged me to share it with others, which I reluctantly did, and people seemed to connect, especially those dealing with their own struggles in life. With the positive feedback, I felt more encouraged to share more of my art, although it also means exposing the depths of what I try so hard to hide inside myself.

Sharing has helped me accept my struggle, empowering me to feel more confident that I can continue to overcome.

Here are some examples of my work:

I Took Medication During Pregnancy, and I'm Still a Good Mom

Motherhood and mental illness are two things that don’t seem to go well together in most people’s minds. The media typically paints a bleak picture by sharing tragic stories where postpartum depression is involved. You never hear about the positive outcomes, which is why I was very happy to hear that Amanda Seyfried opened up about her struggles with [...]

When Your Anxiety Makes You Seem Like You Don't Care

When you’re living with anxiety, sometimes the social cues you give off are misread, and not in a good way. You may come off as uncaring, aloof or like you have a major attitude problem. But those things couldn’t be further from the truth. You feel like yelling at the top of your lungs, “I am [...]

What It Was Like to Grow Up in a Hoarding Family

It was the family secret for as long as I can remember. It was the reason why our friends weren’t allowed to spend the night. The reason why we never had slumber parties. The reason why we didn’t sit down as a family to eat. It was the reason why D. picked me up from [...]
