Tom Petty Dies at the Age of 66, Family Confirms


Legendary rocker Tom Petty died on Monday after suffering from cardiac arrest on Sunday night. His family took him off life support on Monday after he was found unconscious in his home in Malibu, California. He was 66 years old.

“On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty,” said Tony Dimitriades, manager of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in a statement, according to BuzzFeed News.

“He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”

Petty and his band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rose to fame in the 70s with hits such as  “American Girl,” “Free Fallin'” and “Breakdown.” The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Petty had just finished a large tour, headlining his last show in Los Angeles this past Monday.

Petty’s death was falsely reported earlier in the day after CBS news reported that LAPD confirmed the singer’s death. Hours later, LAPD said they could not confirm Petty’s death.

As news broke, fans and fellow celebrities took to Twitter to share their condolences.
