Netflix Renews 'Insatiable' for Second Season Despite Backlash

Netflix has renewed its controversial dark comedy “Insatiable” for a second season. The show was initially criticized for fat-shaming after the first season’s trailer. Negative reviews followed after the show’s premiere in August.

The show follows Patty (Debby Ryan) after she’s lost weight from having her jaw wired shut. Patty competes in pageants as a way to exact revenge on former classmates who bullied her when she was fat.

A Change.org petition to stop the show garnered over 235,000 signatures. The show’s creator, Lauren Gussis, responded to the backlash by sharing a personal story about her struggles with an eating disorder as a teen.

The Mighty reviewed season one, pointing out examples of fat-shaming as well as the show’s negative use of mental health conditions, suicide, disability and other sensitive topics.

The second season is set to air in 2019.
