Bebe Rexha Reveals She Has Bipolar Disorder

Bebe Rexha is not ashamed of her mental illness, and wants the world to know.

The singer, known for her collaboration with Florida Georgia Line on the song, “Meant to Be,” revealed to fans on Twitter that she has bipolar disorder, a mental illness characterized by periods of mania and depression that affect mood, energy and activity levels. She posted:

For the longest time, I didn’t understand why I felt so sick. Why I felt lows that made me not want to leave my house or be around people and why I felt highs that wouldn’t let me sleep, wouldn’t let me stop working or creating music. Now I know why.

She followed up this tweet with another, saying, “I’m bipolar and I’m not ashamed anymore. That is all. (Crying my eyes out.)”

Opening up about your mental illness for the first time is no small feat. As Mighty contributor Rachel Gearinger explained in her piece, “To Anyone Considering ‘Coming Out’ About Their Mental Illness“:

‘Coming out’ about a mental health condition comes with its own difficulties. Telling someone you have a mental illness can be nerve-wracking and painful, even if you’re telling someone you trust and not screaming it to the entire world. Whether it’s telling one person, a crowd or the internet, it’s still hard.

Rexha’s Fans were quick to show their support for the singer and commend her for speaking up about mental health.

Rexha seemingly responded to comments on her initial tweet an hour later by saying, “I don’t want you to feel sorry for me. I just want you to accept me. That’s all. Love you.”
