Anxiety can be so creative. One minute you’re having the time of your life, and the next, anxiety is whispering in your ear, suggesting you’re saying all the wrong things. It plants doubts and fears in your mind, a persistent little voice in your head analyzing every tiny move you make. It crops up around long-forgotten triggers, often in the middle of the night or sometimes for seemingly no reason at all. Anxiety can also be the culprit behind sweaty palms, quick breathing and heart palpitations — it’s both a mental and physical experience for many people.

To capture the complexity and far-reaching impact of anxiety, the Twitter support community Mental Health Notes launched the hashtag, #AnxietyFeelsLike, sharing a short list of the many ways people experience anxiety. The account encouraged others to share their experiences with anxiety, and the hashtag quickly went viral. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, about 18% of people in the U.S. experience anxiety, and it’s the most common mental illness.
