7 Helpful Tips for When Taking a Shower Is Just Too Hard

Hygiene issues such as taking showers and baths are common problems for those who have depression, sensory issues or are on the spectrum.

I often have issues taking showers. I think there are so many other things I could be doing with my time and I don’t like the harshness of the water. However, there are several ways to help with the anxiety of bathing.

Here are tips to help with showering when showering is just too hard.

1. Listen to music while you take a bath or shower.

Listening to music while I take a shower can be the most helpful thing. It gets the focus off the water and helps to decompress. For me, I feel like I’m getting a sense my time isn’t being wasted because I’m using the time to listen to music and maybe even sing if I’m feeling good.

2. Use bath bombs, salts or other sensory things.

Bath bombs and sensory toys can be great things to bring to a bath. It can help soothe the body and create something to focus on. Bath bombs and creating sensory baths can also bring excitement.

3. Take a shower/bath with someone.

If you have someone who can help you take a shower and even shower with you, this can be a great motivator. My husband often takes a shower with me because he knows I hate taking showers. It’s our time to talk about our day.

4. Try to a bath or shower at a different temperature than you are used to.

Sometimes, the temperature can be jarring. The room is cold and the water is hot and the feeling of the extreme temperatures can make it hard to want to take a shower. Sometimes it’s better to maybe bring down the temp of the water and not have it so hot. Another great thing that can help is putting the heater or fan on in the room to get warmed up or cooled off before you get into the shower. This can help with the extreme temperatures.

5. Put on alarms to help remind you when you need to take a shower.

Alarms are a great motivator. Decide on a time you must take a shower and set your alarm. When your alarm goes off, try taking a shower. Even if it takes several alarms, if it helps remind you to take a shower in the end, that’s great!

6. Get a shower stool.

Sometimes it’s just hard to stand that long in the shower. Having a shower stool can help with the process.

7. Dry shampoo and wet wipes.

Sometimes it’s just too hard to take a shower. Wet wipes and dry shampoo can be a lifesaver. You have the ability to clean your skin off a bit and revive your hair. These products can make you feel refreshed even though you weren’t able take a shower.
