Demi Lovato's Mom, Dianna De La Garza, Speaks Up About the Singer's Overdose
Opening up for the first time since her daughter’s overdose this summer, Demi’s Lovato’s mother, Dianna De La Garza, told NewsMaxTV what it was like to hear about her daughter’s hospitalization.
“It’s still a really difficult thing to talk about,” she said. “I literally start to shake a little bit when I remember what happened that day.”
In July, TMZ broke the news that Lovato, well-known for her mental health advocacy, had been rushed to the hospital after an overdose. Just the month before, the singer had released a song called, “Sober,” singing that she was “not sober anymore.” This was after Lovato celebrated six years of sobriety last March.
De La Garza said before she was informed of the news herself, her phone was blowing up with texts from people saying they were sorry to hear the news, and that they were praying for Lovato. She was shocked to receive the messages, and didn’t know what they were talking about.
A few moments later, De La Garza got a call from Lovato’s assistant who told her what happened. Lovato had overdosed, and had been admitted into Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
The words that came out of her mouth were so difficult to hear as a parent… I was in shock, I didn’t know what to say. It was something I never, ever expected to hear as a parent, about any of my kids.
De La Garza said she couldn’t drive in the state she was in, so her eldest daughter, Dallas Lovato, drove them to the hospital.
Throughout the interview, Lovato’s mom emphasized she had gotten her daughter’s permission to share her story. She also said that Lovato is doing much better now, and is working on her sobriety.
We’re so happy to hear Lovato is doing well, and thank her mom for being so honest about an experience no parent should have to go through.
