Dear Teacher, I Need This to Be the Year You Open Your Heart to My Child With a Disability
Dear teacher,
This is the year!
I just know it.
A new school year dawns ahead — and I see hope.
As a mom of a son with a disability, every fall I am optimistic and hopeful.
Every fall I relish in the hope and optimism that this is the school year about to begin.
Will this be the year I’ve dreamed of?
Bring on the fanfare and the applause!
This is the year he’s going to show them how truly awesome he is — and they will finally see the sweet boy we love!
Will this be the year my son is included — and belongs?
Then, reality sets in.
The negative innuendos begin.
Doubts set in.
The fear from the teaching staff starts to overwhelm them.
They don’t know, they don’t understand.
Instead of communication, they see behaviors.
And instead of asking for help, they turn away and are frightened by what they don’t know.
It’s heartbreaking for all.
Because without asking for help — fear will win.
So, please, ask questions!
We are here, awaiting your questions.
We are hoping you will ask.
We have resources and ideas that could help!
We are hoping your heart will be brave enough to open up and see our child!
See his potential.
See his curiosity to learn.
See his value.
See his strengths.
See how brave he is, how smart he is, and see how perfect he is!
And see how he just wants to belong.
Dear teacher, will you open your heart to let him in?
