Melania Trump Undergoes Kidney Surgery
First Lady Melania Trump had kidney surgery on Monday to treat a “benign kidney condition,” the office of the first lady announced.
Trump’s communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said in a statement that she underwent an embolization procedure and would be at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for the rest of the week.
This morning, first lady Melania Trump underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition. The procedure was successful, and there were no complications. Mrs. Trump is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and will likely remain there for the duration of the week. The first lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere.
It’s unclear exactly why Trump had an embolization, but the procedure is typically used to block the flow of blood to a tumor or abnormal growth like uterine fibroids or angiomyolipomas.
President Donald Trump tweeted that the First Lady was “in good spirits.”
Heading over to Walter Reed Medical Center to see our great First Lady, Melania. Successful procedure, she is in good spirits. Thank you to all of the well-wishers!

The last First Lady to undergo a medical procedure while in office was Nancy Reagan, who had a mastectomy in 1987.
