I have been a heavy consumer of dairy my whole life. Dairy has been an important dietary staple that I have consumed in different types; cheese, yogurt and milk being my favorites. I enjoy the taste of dairy, and especially enjoy cheese and yogurt.
To learn that I am now lactose intolerant comes as a surprise. I wasn’t sure what exactly I would do should my body stop producing lactase, by the obvious reality is now that I need to stop consuming lactose. It causes a number of gastrointestinal problems for me following its’ consumption; bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain and cramps are some of the symptoms I face.
I am concerned that I have been lactose intolerant for longer than I can realise. Early intervention for lactose intolerance is difficult as the symptoms vary and are often masked under other illnesses, such as irritable bowel syndrome.
A number of stereotypes remain about dairy and lactose intolerance. Many individuals across cultures consider dairy to be a staple of their diets in different types. The truth is that many of the nutrients found in dairy can be found in other foods and it is not essential for us to consume animal dairy.
The food industry, unfortunately, does not yet have a wide variety of lactose-free dairy products. More innovation is required for us to protect our health and find options which are lactose free. The dairy industry in particular lacks innovation. Many options remain provided from traditional farming methods as opposed to more sophisticated food development techniques.
