15 Tips for Anyone Who Struggles on Long Weekends
I have a variety of mental health diagnoses and a large support team consisting of a case manager, therapist and psychiatrist. During the week if I need to reach out, I can usually expect a response within a day and sometimes even straightaway.
Long weekends can be difficult, especially if, like me, you are used to having a lot of support. The days drag and I can easily become isolated. Not only can I not reach my support team, but also friends may be away or have other plans.
That extra day can really throw a wrench into my psyche and I have learned I need to be prepared for it. It is for that reason I have compiled a list of supports and activities I can do in order maintain my mental health. I share it in case you find long weekends difficult too.
- Keep a list of crisis/support phone numbers and chat websites.
- Plan outings with friends.
- Attend festivals and other weekend activities. Look for free events such as yoga, art galleries or concerts.
- Go to the library for a book, and read it there or at a coffee shop.
- Visit friends or family for the weekend, even if you live in the same town. Have a sleepover.
- Ask friends who will be away if they need a pet sitter.
- Take on a larger project such as cleaning the fridge or going through clothes to donate.
- Cook a favorite meal from scratch and enjoy it all weekend.
- Plan for the coming week, such as organizing clothing and meal prepping.
- Go for walks.
- Engage in hobbies such as photography, art, writing, etc.
- Keep a journal of things you’d like to talk about for when you do have therapy.
- Set aside time to do boring self-care such as paying bills, getting an oil change or laundry.
- Also do fun self-care like a pedicure, and see if a friend can join you.
- Go see a movie.
These are just some of the ways I cope with having a lot of time to spare when my usual supports aren’t around. I have found that by being prepared these weekends can be less challenging. Do you find long weekends difficult? What other activities or ideas do you suggest?
