10 Songs for All My Mental Health Moods
The one thing I’ve found is that no matter my mood or pain level, music is the one thing I can always count on. Here I’ve compiled a list of my 10 go-to songs for different moods and pain levels. I hope they help you as much as they’ve helped me!
1. When I’m frustrated: “King For a Day” by Pierce The Veil ft Kellin Quinn
It is the perfect song for a day when you are once again bombarded by people saying that your pain or illness is an excuse. With lines like, “I’m sick of begging for the things that I want” and “imagine living like a king some day, without a single ghost in the walls” and “we’ll start a new revolution now” — it is the best song to get those frustrations out. Even better is the music video where lead singer Vic Fuentes and Kellin Quinn act as bank employees and realize the boss has been stealing from all of the employees. They arrange for the rest of the band to stage a robbery and give the stolen cash back to the workers. It is also incredible live! I approve!
Honorable mention: “Ivory Tower” by Our Last Night
2. When I’m mentally tired: “Something’s Gotta Give” by All Time Low
Along with the previous theme from “King For a Day,” this song is the perfect one to listen to when you just want to yell, “f*ck the world!” Again the video is very funny. Not relating to the song whatsoever it’s a funny story of a mascot not realizing that he is a zombie. Another great live song!
Honorable mention: 1-800-273-8255 by Logic and Alessia Cara
3. When I’m lonely: “Missing You” by All Time Low
I always recommend ATL, but some songs are worth a special mention. And this is one of them. When you feel like no one gets you and that you’re alone in the world, this is the song to convince you that even if you don’t know them Alex, Jack, Rian and Zach are all your friends no matter what! They even say in the song, “I know that you’ve been having trouble finding your place in the world, I know how much that hurts. But if you need a friend, then please just say the word.” They have always been there for fans as if they were family. We love you too, All Time Low!
Honorable mention: “One More Light” by Linkin Park
4. When I’m feeling optimistic: “Life Is Waiting” by Faber Drive
On the days where you feel OK, pain is at a low and mood is at a high, this is a good song to give you some motivation to do something. With lines such as “life is waiting to take me away,” it makes you dream of ways to get your life back. Nothing in the song is “I have my life,” it’s more “I want my life” and makes you believe that you can have it back once day.
Honorable mention: “Weightless” by All Time Low
5. When I’m struggling with depression: “Sunrise” by Our Last Night
A song inspiring those struggling with depression to make it one more night and see one more sunrise.
Honorable mention: “Goner” by Twenty One Pilots
6. When I’m feeling happy: “All Star” by Smash Mouth
This song is always good when you’re in a good mood! A classic 2000’s anthem that everyone knows all the lyrics to! Just an all around fun song! Enough said. Also good for the optimistic mood.
Honorable mention: “Big Time” by Down With Webster
7. When I’m feeling confident: “Fly” by Sleeping With Sirens
“I feel I’m who I’m meant to be” to me is the only lyric that is needed to make this a confident song! “I’m ready to burn down all those walls I’ve been building up inside and put back all of those pieces of this broken heart tonight” is another lyric that makes this song good to me! Lots of Sleeping With Sirens songs are about loving yourself. Great band!
Honorable mention: “Whoa Is Me” by Down With Webster
8. When I’m sad: “So Far Now” by Jesse LaBelle
A song about how you feel when everything’s gotten you beat down. Slow, acoustic, soft voice — everything you need in a sad song! I recommend his entire first album! I can’t even pick just one lyric, they’re all too good! Nothing else to say except love his voice!
Honorable mention: “Miserable at Best” by Mayday Parade
9. When I’m feeling misunderstood: “Cold Cold Cold” by Cage The Elephant
“Doctor look into my eye. I’ve been breathing air but there’s no sign of life. Doctor the problems in my chest. My heart is cold as ice but it’s anybody’s guess. Doctor can you help me I just don’t feel right, better make it fast before I change my mind. Doctor can you help me cause something just don’t feel right.” This is how the song starts. Do I really need to say anymore? It’s a hard life trying to get help from doctors and this song sums it up. Doctors or people in general not understanding you and your pain the way you need them to. I feel in love with this song the moment I heard it!
Honorable mention: “Welcome To My Life” by Simple Plan
10. When I’m stressed: “Stressed Out” by Twenty One Pilots
For obvious reasons I had to include this song. This song I was always able to apply directly to my life with the line “now we need to make money.” Because of my pain I had massive anxiety about being able to keep a job. It also became that I needed money to print resumes and pay my phone bill to be able to get a job but without the job I had no money to do either. Same with rent and groceries, I needed money to pay for both but no job. At one point I wasn’t able to listen to this song without getting very upset! I find Twenty One Pilots to be one of the best bands lyric-wise if you’re dealing with depression, anxiety or any mental issues. Tyler Joseph has gone through it and from that he wrote some incredibly close to home songs!
Honorable mention: “Blame” by Bastille
